Chapter 8: Games Behind Closed Doors
The bystanders quickly and tactfully left, leaving the space to the two main characters. Even the nosiest classmates knew when to disappear; it’s a talent all Indian schoolkids master.
Through the crack in the door, I saw Ritika sit on Kabir’s lap, eagerly wrapping her arms around his neck.
“Kabir, you haven’t been close to me for so long... When she’s done filling out her college preferences, you have to dump her and come back to me.”
“I promised you... As long as you help me destroy that girl, I’ll give myself to you...”
As she spoke, she lifted her head to kiss Kabir’s lips, but he looked at his shoes, then at me, as if weighing a secret he couldn’t quite say, and turned away.
He probably didn’t even know why himself.
After dodging, a hint of confusion flashed in his eyes.
Leaning against the wall, I couldn’t help but laugh silently. For all their plotting, these two were still children, still stuck in the same old schoolyard games.
