Chapter 8: Losing Hope
This wasn't even the way Caleb went home—he must have followed me the whole way.
No matter what happened, no matter what his beloved did wrong, he would always take her side.
This was the person I'd had a crush on for three years—a hopeless case.
In the end, I was still punished. My explanation was dismissed as making excuses.
Who told me to be ranked 51st, while Aubrey was 7th?
Teachers always subconsciously favor top students.
Our homeroom teacher was also the math teacher.
Originally, the punishment wasn't supposed to be public, but she announced it in front of everyone, making me stand outside for a whole period as a warning to the class.
"Some girls need to think about their choices. Not only are you slow, but you pick up all sorts of bad habits. Don't drag down our top class."
Her words echoed in the hallway. Aubrey turned a page of her SAT prep book with a faint smile, her eyes full of pride.
And Caleb couldn't even look me in the eye.
