Chapter 11: Sade’s Laughter, Amara’s Silence
For the next two days, as Sade dey house,
Her laughter with Chika dey always loud anytime my hand touch doorknob.
The laughter dey pepper my ear. I dey hide for my room, dey listen. Chika voice dey loud, e dey call "Mama" up and down. Sometimes I go try smile, but e go die for my face quick quick.
“Mama——”
Chika dey call, laugh like bell,
My nail dey enter my palm; na so I go stop myself from open door.
If Sade fit make Chika well, maybe na good thing, abi?
I dey tell myself: maybe e go better if Chika dey happy. But my chest dey pain, the emptiness dey swallow me like big hole. I dey beg my hand make e no open door, make I no disgrace myself.
Two days later, I meet Chief Okafor for old house.
The house old, but e still get that big man scent. I dey sit for parlour, dey wait. My hand dey sweat, but I no gree show fear.
“You wan divorce?”
Chief Okafor carry tea cup, sip, but him eyes dey look me well.
He dey calm, but the power for him eye strong. I dey swallow spit, dey pray make my voice no shake as I go answer.
*[The supporting character wan divorce? No be the main man and main woman suppose talk am after dem no love again?]*
*[The plot don change? But as long as dem divorce, e no go stop the main man and main woman from end up together.]*
The comments dey shout, but I no send. My focus dey Chief Okafor face, dey search for small pity or sign of help.
The comments no reduce the pressure wey Chief Okafor dey give.
My heart still dey shake.
The silence dey long. Only wall clock dey tick for parlour. I dey wait for his verdict like accused for chief palace.
“Na because of that Sade?” Chief Okafor continue.
Him voice deep. He cross leg, drop cup for table. The question sharp, but e no loud. For my mind, I dey wonder if na test.
I look up, shock.
He drop him cup.
My hand dey sweat, but I no gree look away. Na now I need courage pass anything.
“No be say you suppose surprise. I don check that Sade.
Her family normal, she finish from one better university for here, na by chance she become Ifeoma assistant.
But one thing dey wey you never know.”
He pause, the silence thick like ogbono soup. My heart dey beat, my ear dey open. For this moment, I dey wish say life get remote control, make I rewind back to four years ago, before I cross this threshold.
