Mama just waka come with my homework: "Amara, your homework no reach 70% correct. Come house go correct your mistake."
She hold the exercise books high, her eyes hard. Everybody for bukka just dey look us. Even the suya man for outside pause, dey look us. My birthday joy just vanish. I feel the ground shift under my feet, as if shame dey wash me from head to toe. My friends try cover for me, but mama no send anybody. Na so my birthday, my small joy, just scatter like puff-puff for rain. I follow mama go house, my heart heavy like stone. For my mind, I dey beg God: make next year better, make mama see me true.
