Chapter 3: The Beginning of the End
Two days ago, I’d forgotten something at the office and came back to grab it. Passing Derek’s door, I noticed the light still on.
Emily was perched sideways on his lap, arms looped around his neck, nestled in close.
She said in a teasing voice, "Derek, I want to get married."
I’m not in the habit of eavesdropping, but that line stopped me in my tracks.
Derek wore a lazy half-smile, eyes barely open, fingers threading through Emily’s hair again and again.
"What’s the rush, sweetheart? Can’t wait to walk down the aisle?"
Emily pouted. "That’s not it. I just want to marry you. Derek, will you marry me?"
Standing outside, I watched through the crack in the door. Derek fell silent. The smile faded. For a moment, he looked straight at me—our eyes met, hallway to office, in the dim gold light. The world seemed to freeze. Then he looked away, and the spell was broken.
Emily turned to me, her voice steady but her hands fidgeting. "Ms. Harper, Derek doesn’t love you anymore. He loves me now."
I lowered my eyes. "Then congratulations."
