Chapter 2: Thing One and Thing Two
When Lily and I were five, neither of us had a formal name, because my dad didn’t know which of us should be named Natalie Thompson.
People called us all sorts of things: "the twins," "the girls," or sometimes just "hey you two." Sometimes the neighbor kids just called us "Thing One and Thing Two," which made us giggle and roll our eyes. There were endless debates among family friends about who looked more like a "Natalie" or a "Lillian." Still, at home, it was always just us and a whole lot of uncertainty. In the back of my mind, I felt like we were waiting for someone else to decide who we really were.
